What is Brilinta?
Brilinta, and similar drugs, is a prescription medicine that is used to decrease the risk of having a heart attack in certain people. It is also prescribed to reduce the chances of death following a heart attack or stroke. It is known by its generic name ticagrelor. A generic version may or may not be commercially available. Brand-name Brilinta is available as a 60 mg and 90 mg oral tablet.
Brilinta Information
For those with acute coronary syndrome or a history of a heart attack, treatment with Brilinta is usually started with an initial loading dose of 180 mg. Then, for the first year, it is taken as a 90 mg tablet twice daily.
After the first year, it is taken as a 60 mg tablet twice daily. In patients with coronary artery disease and no history of a heart attack or stroke, Brilinta is taken as a 60 mg tablet twice daily.
In those with an acute ischemic stroke, Brilinta is started with an 180 mg loading dose and then continued as a 90 mg tablet twice daily for up to one month. It is typically taken with a daily 75 to 100 mg aspirin dose.
Brilinta works as a blood thinner to prevent the development of blood clots. This action helps the blood flow more freely in order to decrease the chances of a heart attack or stroke.
On a chemical level, it is known as a P2Y12 platelet inhibitor that stops the activation of platelets during the blood clot formation process. This helps stop platelets from joining together to form dangerous blood clots that can block blood vessels and cause heart attacks or strokes.
Brilinta is used to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or a past history of heart attack. It can also reduce the risk of blood clot formation in people who have received a stent.
In people with coronary artery disease who are at a higher risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke, Brilinta can be an effective medicine to decrease the risk of heart attack or stroke.
It can also be taken in people who are having a mini-stroke or transient ischemic attack in order to decrease the risk of stroke. It is typically taken twice daily although the dosage depends on the condition being treated.
