What is Pyridium used for?
Pyridium (phenazopyridine) is a prescription drug which has a local specific analgesic effect in the urinary tract. It provides relief of symptoms including pain, burning, urgency and frequency plus other discomforts caused by irritation of the lower urinary tract. Take this medication with meals to avoid abdominal pain.
This irritation can be caused by surgery, endoscopic procedures, use of catheters, urinary tract infection (UTI) or trauma. Pyridium should only be used until the cause of the irritation is identified. At this time, Pyridium should be stopped and treatment should be initiated to relieve symptoms and treat the cause of the irritation.
Some side effects of Pyridium are rash, pruritus, headache and gastrointestinal disturbance. It can cause a reddish-orange discoloration of the urine and can also stain contact lenses. There are rare instances of yellowed skin.
