When temperatures drop, you might have noticed that we are more prone to catch illnesses. People tend to stay more inside that helps viruses to spread easily. In addition, the dry and cold air aggravates cough and common colds too. Although most of their symptoms are manageable, some tend to linger if left untreated.

Here are the 5 most common illnesses during winter:

The Common Colds

This is characterized by sneezing and a runny nose that usually lasts from 2 to 10 days. A person with a cold is highly contagious. That's why the best way to avoid the spread of colds is frequent handwashing. Decongestants, cough drops, and antihistamines can help with the symptoms. Complete rest and more liquids may speed your recovery.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, where the air passages between the mouth, nose, and lungs. You may have bronchitis if you can't stop coughing, have an overproduction of mucus, experience shortness of breath, or have discomfort in your chest. There's no cure for it as it should clear up on its own within 2 weeks. With a humidifier, cough medicine, and pain reliever, your symptoms would be manageable.

The Flu

Influenza is one of the most common illnesses during winter in most places. It is a viral respiratory illness that has the same symptoms as the common cold. However, flu is accompanied by more, such as fever, nausea, vomiting, exhaustion, headache, or cold sweats. Although influenza is often mild and healthy persons usually recover without needing medical care or antiviral drugs, certain persons are at high risk of developing serious flu complications. This includes people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), pregnant women, and children younger than 5 years. Such persons are encouraged to get a flu vaccine each year.

Relieve flu symptoms with rest, fluids, and medicines. In severe cases, antiviral medications like Tamiflu or Relenza may be prescribed to reduce the flu’s duration, severity, and risk of complications.

Painful Joints

Arthritis is the tenderness or swelling of one or more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint stiffness and pain. This pain usually gets worse with age. The most common kind of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis(RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). A study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders examined participants with osteoarthritis (OA) and found that 67% of them were weather-sensitive and felt more joint pain during winter.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you can lessen painful joints by staying active through exercise and by managing your weight. Also, continue taking prescribed medications and stay positive throughout the season.

Eczema

It's very common during winter to experience eczema. Eczema is a skin condition that causes red, inflamed skin, which becomes very dry and itchy. Eczema flare-ups are common in winter due to the air being drier than normal. There is no cure for eczema. However, we can lighten up the burden of its symptoms. Avoid hot baths and harsh soaps, try a humidifier, and drink plenty of water. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

When temperatures drop, you might have noticed that we are more prone to catch illnesses. People tend to stay more inside that helps viruses to spread easily. In addition, the dry and cold air aggravates cough and common colds too. Although most of their symptoms are manageable, some tend to linger if left untreated.

Antibiotics are a range of powerful medicines that help stop infections caused by bacteria. They stop infections by killing the bacteria. In other words, antibiotics fight bacteria by keeping them from copying themselves or reproducing. Before we talk about antibiotic resistance, here is the basic information you need to understand first.

Fast Facts on Antibiotics:

  • Antibiotics cannot treat viral infections, such as colds, flu, and most coughs.
  • In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first natural antibiotic.
  • Fleming also predicted that there would be antibiotic resistance.

Types of Infections that Can Be Treated with Antibiotics:

  • Some ear and sinus infections
  • Dental infections
  • Skin infections
  • Meningitis (swelling of the brain and spinal cord)
  • Strep throat
  • Bladder and kidney infections
  • Bacterial pneumonia
  • Whooping cough

Common Side Effects of Antibiotics:

  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • rash
  • upset stomach
  • with certain antibiotics, fungal infections (of the mouth, digestive tract, and vagina)

Less Common Side Effects of Antibiotics:

  • formation of kidney stones, when taking sulfonamides
  • abnormal blood clotting, when taking some cephalosporins
  • sensitivity to sunlight, when taking tetracyclines
  • blood disorders, when taking trimethoprim
  • deafness, when taking erythromycin and the aminoglycosides
  • some people, especially older adults, may experience bowel inflammation, which can lead to bloody diarrhea

Ways How to Use Antibiotics:

People must not stop a course of antibiotics halfway through, even when they start feeling better. If in doubt, they can ask their doctor for advice. Antibiotic resistance is mostly accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics.

Antibiotics are usually taken by mouth. However, doctors can administer them by injection or apply them directly to the part of the body with the infection.

Most antibiotics start fighting infection within a few hours. You must complete the whole course of medication to prevent the return of the infection.

Do not take some antibiotics with certain foods and drinks. Follow the instructions correctly for the medication to be effective. People taking metronidazole should not drink alcohol.

Avoid dairy products when taking tetracyclines, as these might disrupt the absorption of the medication.

What is Antibiotic Resistance?

Stopping the medication before the course has finished increases the risk that the bacteria will become resistant to future treatments. The ones that survive will have had some exposure to the antibiotic and may consequently develop resistance to it.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change in response to the use of these medicines. Bacteria (not humans or animals) become antibiotic-resistant. Antibiotic resistance is mostly accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics.

When infections can no longer be treated by first-line antibiotics, more expensive medicines must be used. It also causes a longer duration of illness and treatment in hospitals. This may also lead to an increase in healthcare costs as well as economic burdens on families and communities.

Antibiotic resistance is putting the achievements of modern medicine at risk. Organ transplants, chemotherapy, and surgeries such as cesarean sections become much more dangerous without effective antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of infections.

With the World Health Organization (WHO) focusing this year on antibiotic resistance, it's the perfect time to educate ourselves on this topic. Ask your doctor about your antibiotics (why is that particular antibiotic appropriate for your particular illness? What results can you expect, and how long will that take?).

According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide rates for adults in the United States are on the rise. Since 1999, suicide rates in 25 states increased by more than 30%. In 2006 in the USA, suicide was accounted for nearly 45,000 deaths approximately.

Here are 5 more quick facts related to suicide in the USA:

  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages. (CDC)
  • Every day, approximately 123 Americans die by suicide. (CDC)
  • There is 1 death by suicide in the US every 12 minutes. (CDC)
  • The highest suicide rates in the US are among Whites, American Indians and Alaska Natives.
  • Only half of all Americans experiencing an episode of major depression receive treatment. (NAMI)

While there is no single cause for suicide, there are risk factors and warning signs which may increase likelihood of an attempt. However, learning them can save lives. According to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, here are the risk factors and some warning signs:

Risk Factors:

  • Health - mental health conditions, serious physical health conditions like chronic pain, traumatic brain injury
  • Environmental - easy access to firearms & drugs, stressful life events, exposure to another person's suicide
  • Historical - previous suicide attempts, childhood abuse, family history of suicide

Warning Signs:

  • Talk - killing themselves, feeling hopeless, having no reason to live, unbearable pain
  • Behavior - increased use of alcohol & drugs, isolating from family & friends, sleeping too much or too little
  • Mood - depression, anxiety, agitation/anger, humiliation/ shame, relief/ sudden improvement

According to studies, a person who dies by suicide leaves behind an estimated 6 or more “suicide survivors” or those people who’ve lost someone and are left grieving and struggling to understand why their loved ones end their lives.

This September, let us educate and hold on to each other in order to prevent suicide among our friends and family. Please go to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention of AFSP's website to gain more access to resources about suicide prevention.

Medications come in all kinds of forms. Results are the main priority that patients have with medicine. As such, people might wonder if there are any difference whether a tablets or capsule are more effective and efficient. These are the two most common delivery mechanisms so it does beg the question.

As expected, there are differences between the two that might be relevant. These are some specific details you can learn about tablets and gel capsules, courtesy of where you buy medication online from Canada.

Tablets

The most common form of solid medicine you can find often comes in a plain, white pill appearance that many refer to as tablets. Tablet pills are derived from granulate or powder ingredients that are bonded together during the manufacturing process to make for a small dosage that is easy to digest. Tablets usually contain safe bonding agents that hold this pill together, while the one or two active ingredients that work to help the body as advertised are also included.

Tablets can be coated in order for them to be easier to swallow, either with a type of sugar or other coating. Tablets that are not coated are rougher and might leave a foul taste in the patient’s mouth when swallowed. Coating can also protect the pill from breaking down prematurely from gastric acid until the pill reaches the small intestine in the body. This is so that the pill can deliver the best results without the ingredients getting absorbed inside the stomach. Tablets are often the form of pill of choice for manufacturers as they are easy to make and can last a number of years before expiration.

Gel Capsules

Gel capsules are those glossy, colorful pills that are completely filled with liquid inside. The primary advantage that they have over tablets is that they can work faster. While tablets require 20 to 30 minutes for absorption, gel capsules can only take two to three minutes, so you can feel its effects quickly.

When you consume medicine in a liquid form, all that the body needs to do is break the coating down that encases the liquid. A tablet needs to be broken down entirely, thus explaining the longer time required. Gel capsules can also contain more active ingredients compared to tablets, and there are no bonding agents to be found aside from the coating itself. Speaking of the coating, that makes the gel capsule easier to swallow, and don’t usually have a funky aftertaste to them. The coating is made of a gelatin made of animal protein.

There are a couple of downsides to gel capsules that manufacturers face. The first is that they are expensive to make, as they cost more to make than tablets due to the resources required making gelatin coatings. The second disadvantage is that they do not last as long as tablets before they expire. While it’s intuitive to think the coating can protect the liquid inside indefinitely. In reality, it’s only a matter of time before those ingredients evaporate and patients are left with just colorful water inside.

Summary

There are primarily two types of solid medicine that manufacturers make today: Tablets and gel capsules. Tablets are a series of powdered or granulated ingredients bonded together and can be coated or left uncoated. Gel capsules are small amounts of liquid medicine encased by a gelatinous coating. Both types of pills have their share of advantages and disadvantages both for manufacturers and consumers.
