Premarin (conjugated estrogens) is used at the end of menopause to reduce moderate to severe hot flashes.

What is Menopause?

Natural Menopause is the official end of the menstrual cycle. Women experience menopause usually around the age of 50 to 65 years of age, but can also occur as early as 45. Only one percent of women experience premature menopause that occurs at a younger age.

This typically occurs when you have gone at least 12 months without a cycle. Women tend to lose estrogen production as they grow older. Decreased estrogen levels can lead to notable symptoms of menopause, such as vaginal dryness, chills, hot flashes, mood changes, night sweats, thinning hair, weight gain and dry skin.

It is often prescribed to prevent Osteoporosis, when the body loses too much bone, a serious condition that can also occur in women with menopause. Menopause is a natural occurrence in women and although there is no cure for this condition, you can manage the symptoms.

What is Premarin?

There are many different medications that can help manage symptoms of menopause. One popular medicine is Premarin (conjugated estrogens). Conjugated estrogens are a mixture of outside estrogens that mainly come from horses, therefore helping to reduce symptoms by adding estrogen that is lost during the menopause phase.

Premarin is a prescription drug that comes in both Premarin vaginal cream and tablet formulations. The cream can be applied from once daily for a few days to twice weekly depending on how serious, and how recurrent the symptoms are.

The tablets are taken orally once a day. Depending on your symptoms, the cream can be applied to help combat vaginal symptoms. If you are having other full-body symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal complications combined, the tablets may be the best option.
Doctors may also prescribe Premarin to prevent heart disease. Read the patient information document included with the product.

How to Use Premarin?

Premarin cream should be applied via an applicator that is usually given with the medication. The amount of cream prescribed should be added to the applicator, inserted into the vagina and then released inside. This is typically applied before bedtime. Tablets should be taken orally as directed by your doctor.

What Are Premarin's Side Effects?

The side effects typically associated with Premarin cream are:

  • Headaches (experienced more frequently with tablets)
  • The pain of the pelvis area
  • Breast pain
  • Vaginitis
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Irregular periods
  • Other vaginal complications (will increase risk of ovarian cancer)

If you have any undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, history of breast cancer, blood clots, or heart complications (such as heart attacks or strokes), you should have a discussion with your doctor before starting this medication. Report side effects and allergic reactions to your doctor to ensure your treatment plan yields the best results.

It may not be a suitable treatment for you as Premarin may worsen these conditions. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your healthcare professional. Premarin can increase the risk of developing cancer of the uterus (womb), blood clots in the legs and stroke or heart attack.

Other alternatives may need consideration before starting this medication. Avoid Premarin use during pregnancy and use caution when breastfeeding. It may affect breast milk.

What Is The Cost of Premarin?

Currently, Premarin is a brand-only medication and there are no generic alternatives available. However, Your Canada Drug store offers an amazing deal on one month or three-month supply for both the tablets and vaginal cream. All that is needed is a valid prescription from a doctor sent to the pharmacy and you will be able to get a great discount on your medication. What Are The Other Medications Used for Menopause?

Menopause is a naturally occurring event in a woman’s life. There is no cure but there are other Premarin alternatives that can help relieve symptoms. If you experience more symptoms such as hot flashes or mood changes (also called vasomotor symptoms), the best medications to help manage these are:

  • Gabapentin
  • Venlafaxine
  • Clonidine
  • Paroxetine
  • Other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) antidepressants
  • Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM) such as tamoxifen and raloxifene

If you experience more vaginal symptoms, such as vaginal dryness and sexual dysfunction issues, a hormone replacement cream will be your best option. Creams such as Estrace (estradiol) or even estradiol/progesterone-based patches like Climara, may improve your condition. Many pharmacies have compounded hormone creams that are similar to Premarin. The best part about this option is the cream dosages are usually tailored to the patient’s need. There are also natural supplements such as, black cohosh that are effective in managing symptoms.

What Are The Lifestyle Changes to Help Manage Menopause?

On top of medications, there are ways to manage menopause symptoms through some lifestyle changes.

  • Avoid alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine since these may worsen hot flashes
  • Quit smoking, if you smoke
  • Maintain a healthy weight to avoid frequent hot flashes
  • Try self-calming techniques such as yoga and mindfulness meditation

Although there can be nothing done to prevent menopausal symptoms, the good news is you do not have to suffer! There are tons of choices available and there is something that can work for you. Consult with your doctor today and find out ways you can manage your symptoms and regain your life back!

Accessing birth control is not always easy for many women. For women who are looking to prevent pregnancy, there are many options available that one can consider in the form of prescription or over-the-counter products. One of these options is called the NuvaRing, also known as the birth control ring. The NuvaRing performs is a form of what’s called “hormonal contraception”. It works by putting the body’s hormone levels in a state where pregnancy isn’t possible. Alternatives to the NuvaRing include the birth control pill, the Xulane patch, and the Depo-Provera injection.

What is NuvaRing?

The NuvaRing is a small, flexible, ring-shaped instrument that is about two inches in diameter. This ring contains the hormones progestin and estrogen, as well as two substances crucial to preventing pregnancy called etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. How this ring works is that the user places it into the vagina, where it will release a low dosage of hormones periodically to create the conditions where pregnancy is impossible. This ring is to be replaced monthly, and the user can insert and remove them on their own without any professional assistance, similar to a tampon. When used correctly, the NuvaRing has a success rate of over 90 percent. You can buy NuvaRing online for cheap, whether to try it out for the first time, or to stock up on more when you are running out.

When the NuvaRing releases hormones into your body, the vaginal lining absorbs these hormones, which slows down the body’s ovulation process. When this happens, your ovaries do not release any eggs for fertilization, meaning you become incapable of getting pregnant. The hormones that come with the NuvaRing also reinforce the mucus in your cervix, which blocks sperm cells and limits their ability to pass the cervix during intimacy.

How to Handle Your NuvaRing?

While inserting a NuvaRing does sound easy and straightforward, there are a couple things that you absolutely have to do before you use it. Firstly, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to remove bacteria so it cannot enter the vagina. Clean and dry your hands after washing. When you are ready to insert your NuvaRing in, squeeze the sides of the ring together and gently work the ring into your vagina.
Don’t worry about the placement of the ring. As long as you don’t feel anything when you walk around, you have placed it in correctly. If you can feel it while walking around, remove it and try placing it in again.

The NuvaRing is meant to be worn at all times, including during sleep, exercise, and during intimacy. It is not recommended, but you do have the option of removing it during intimacy. You should never leave it out for longer than 3 hours, and it must be rinsed with cool water before being put back in. You can either opt to leave your NuvaRing in for a whole month, or decide to take it out after three weeks and take a 7 day break. The latter option will mean you still get your regular menstrual period.

Once you have your NuvaRing delivered to you, it them in a place at room temperature and away from sunlight. It is possible for your NuvaRing to expire, just like any other medication. Thus, make sure your NuvaRing is still good before you use it. If it is stored at room temperature it can be safely used for 4 months following the day your prescription is filled. If the expiry date on the packaging has passed do not use the NuvaRing.

Summary

The NuvaRing is a birth control method that releases hormones into the body periodically. Using NuvaRing the right way ensures you can prevent pregnancy in a safe and low effort manner.

I missed my Oral Contraceptive Pills, what do I do?

How to manage missed doses of combined hormonal oral contraceptive pill.

According to reports up to half of women don’t take combination Oral Contraceptives regularly…and many don’t know what to do when a dose is missed.   The most risky time to miss a pill is at the beginning or end of a 21-day cycle. It is like extending the hormone-free interval beyond seven days…increasing the risk of ovulation and unintended pregnancy.

What to do is largely dependent on when the dose was missed.

Missed 1-2 pills in WEEK ONE

If one or two pills are missed take one pill as soon as possible and then continuing the pack. It is okay if this means taking two pills in one day.   It is recommended that you use backup contraception for 7 days.

Missed 1-2 pills in WEEK Two to Three

If one or two pills are missed take one pill as soon as possible and then continuing the current pack. It is okay if this means taking two pills in one day. Skip the placebo pills and go straight to a new pack without the usual hormone-free interval. No backup is usually needed.

Missed 3 pills in WEEK Two to Three

If three pills are missed take one pill as soon as possible and then continuing the current pack. It is okay if this means taking two pills in one day. Skip the placebo pills and go straight to a new pack without the usual hormone-free interval. It is recommended you use backup contraception for 7 days.
